Berkeley Nest

Location: Cambridge, MA

Status: Permitting

Team: (Architect) HEXi

Honoring the heritage of a residence dating to 1863, this landscape design serves as a bridge between the historic character of a prominent Cambridge neighborhood and the modern lifestyle of its owners. The design strategy focuses on a measured "entry progression," utilizing the landscape to mediate the transition from the public streetscape to the private domestic "nest."

The arrival experience begins at the street frontage with a "welcome mat" of irregular stone paving, nestled within a palette of native New England plantings. This organic edge softens the property’s boundary while preserving the integrity of the historic Great lawn, a defining feature that maintains the home’s original 19th century stature. A structured path guides visitors through this landscape, balancing the preservation of open green space with the strategic introduction of layered screening to ensure year round privacy. By weaving together traditional materials and ecological textures, the project provides contemporary amenities while deeply respecting the site’s architectural lineage.
